Aunt Nonie's
Notes and Letters
__________________________________
These notes and letters belonged to Aunt Nonie, my father's aunt,
who made copies and sent them to my Dad. When she did this, I'm not sure,
but it was before I was about 15 because I remember reading them over and over,
trying to make connections, enthralled with the information they contained.
After all, Aunt Nonie had part of our family history back to 1585!
None of the notes are in Aunt Nonie's handwriting, so they must have
been sent to her from other relatives and that is what the letters
seem to indicate. There are two letters among the papers, one
addressed to Aunt Nonie from her cousin, Wendall Phillips; and the other
addressed to Aunt Nonie's Aunt Minnie from Nonie's other cousin,
Oz or Oswald Lewis. It seems they were keenly interested in
their genealogy and did a lot of research to get all
the wealth of information they did. I have the luxury of the internet; they did
not, so I appreciate this treasure, especially since it really gave me a
good "start" as Wendall says, in my research.

Letter to Aunt Nonie from her cousin Wendall

Letter to Aunt Nonie
from her cousin Wendall
September 1986
In his letter, Wendall expresses some
confusion about which line they descended from in the
notes he had available. He says, "It looks to me as
if the William Gaylord we are descended from who
married Lydia Hitchcock has to be the son of one of
the sons of John the third son of Samuel + Mary."
In fact, there was a gap in generations in the notes.
Gaylord Family Notes
As Wendall noted in his letter, these notes can get a little confusing! In this first set, they have their line back to William Gaylord b. 1775 who married Lydia Hitchcock. The other names are the lines that married into the Gaylord line.
This next set of notes is where the generations gap and then pick up again. The previous information has traced back to William Gaylord, b. 1775. This next set STARTS at a William Gaylord, b. 1585 in England and traces down but never reconnects with William b. 1775. This set includes the couple to which Wendall was referring to, "Samuel + Mary" Gaylord. In my Gaylord Family Genealogy, I have the missing generations accounted for. We did not descend from "V John" in these notes, but another son of "Samuel + Mary" named William. His son was Oliver, his son was the William in the notes above, born in 1775 and married to Lydia Hitchcock.
I believe the information in these notes may have been obtained from the
Genealogical Dictionary of New England.

This next set of Gaylord Family Notes appears to have
been photocopied from a book, possibly a Bible. Again, it is the record
of William Gaylord b. 1775 and his children's births and deaths.
