Census records are available at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., or regionally in dozens of locations countrywide. You can also research them on genealogy websites like Ancestry.com. Some are offered free online for viewing. In my case, I did most of my census research through my library, which has an Ancestry.com subscription and a subscription to Heritage Quest. The first US Census was taken in 1790, then every ten years thereafter. Most of the 1890 census documents were destroyed in a fire. Until 1850, the census only listed the head of house by name, then the number of individuals living there within a certain age range. In 1850, all individuals in the home are listed under the head of house, which is a valuable research tool to genealogists. There is other information also on the census. For example, the age of each person, their sex, where they were born, where their parents were born and so on. In some instances, even how many children the wife had borne, and for immigrants, the year they immigrated into the United States. But, beware, sometimes the census information can be misleading, or incorrect. It's no unusual for names to be misspelled or the age, month or year of birth of an individual to be incorrect. I included the publication, roll and page number for each census.
