United State Federal Censuses: Through my local library, I have remote access to a database by Heritage Quest with an index of names in several of the US Censuses, and then access to the image as well. Some of the censuses are not indexed, so I can not offer to browse through page after page of Town censuses. You might check with your local library if this database is offered to you. These are the census years which are indexed: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1860, 1870, 1880, (1890*), 1900, 1910 and 1920.
*The 1890 census was 99% destroyed in a fire, so very limited documents are left. These include very small parts of Alabama, District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota and Texas. It is highly unlikely your ancestor could be in one of these rare documents, so don't be disappointed.
