Here is a good example of how Census documents can help further your research.

There are several Phillips families listed on this page.

Notice that George Phillips only has two people living in his household, a male who is 20-30 years old

and a female who is 20-30 years old, obviously his wife and himself. They may have been recently married to not have any children as of yet. Notice above George is Daniel Phillips, who has a few young men and one young woman living there, but then a male and female who are both 50-60 years old, probably Daniel himself and his wife. Often, you will notice on the censuses that the of-age sons who are married with their own households are listed either just before or after their parents or a few names away. There is a John Phillips listed three names down, and also an Eli Phillips listed after John. Eli and his wife are listed as being 80-90 years old. George was born about 1805, so Eli's wife would be too old to have had George, indicating possibly Eli and his wife are George's grandparents. So, it's possible that John or more likely Daniel was George's father. It's a good place to start, so I'll make a note of that in my file and when I find more solid proof, I'll add it to my information.
